7 Best Quizlet Alternatives in 2026 (Free Options Compared)

7 Best Quizlet Alternatives in 2026 (Free Options Compared)

The best free Quizlet alternative for most students is Knowt, which offers
unlimited free Learn mode and imports Quizlet sets. Anki is the best free
choice for long-term spaced repetition if you are willing to make your own
cards. Quizgecko is best for turning your own notes, PDFs or Quizlet sets into
practice quizzes, including for nursing exams.

That is the short answer. The longer one depends on why you are leaving. Most
people searching for apps like Quizlet hit the same wall: Quizlet is still free
to join, but Learn and Test are now metered for free accounts, and even the
cheaper paid tier caps them each month. If that is your problem, you need a
tool where the study mode itself is free. If your problem is that writing cards
takes too long, you need something else entirely.

  • Choose Knowt for the closest free Quizlet-style experience.
  • Choose Anki for maximum scheduling control and long-term card review.
  • Choose Quizgecko when you want one upload to become quizzes, flashcards,
    notes and audio review.
  • Choose Brainscape for a simpler confidence-rated flashcard loop.
  • Choose RemNote when your notes and flashcards need to live together.
  • Choose StudyFetch for a broad AI study workspace.
  • Choose Gizmo for a mobile, game-like flashcard experience.

Cram still appears on older "websites like Quizlet" lists, but cram.com says the site will retire on November 9, 2026. Do not move a library there. If you have sets on Cram, move them before that date. Do not choose from feature counts alone. A smaller tool you open every day is more useful than a crowded dashboard you abandon after a week. ## Why are people looking for apps like Quizlet? Because the study modes that matter before a test are no longer free. Quizlet's own help centre says non-subscribers can use Learn for a limited number of rounds per flashcard set and get one practice test per set in Test. Flashcards, set creation and games like Match remain free, with ads. The paid tiers have their own ceiling. Quizlet's upgrade page describes Quizlet Plus as including 20 rounds of Learn and 3 practice tests per month, while Plus Unlimited removes those caps. [PCMag's 2026 Quizlet review](https://au.pcmag.com/language-learning/41677/quizlet) lists Plus at $7.99 per month or $35.99 per year, and Plus Unlimited at $9.99 per month or $44.99 per year. Quizlet only attaches its 7-day free trial to annual plans. Twenty Learn rounds is not much for a nursing student working through a 300-term pharmacology set in the week before a unit exam. That is the moment most people go looking for websites like Quizlet. To be fair to Quizlet, its shared library is still the largest. If you mostly study classmates' sets in Flashcards or Match, the free plan may be all you need. ## How did we compare these Quizlet alternatives? We checked each provider's public pricing page, help centre, product documentation and official app listing on October 13, 2026. We looked for a free tier, current US web pricing, a documented way to bring in Quizlet sets, scheduled review, and practice beyond front-and-back cards. Quizgecko's limits and prices come from our own plan configuration. This was a desk review. We did not buy seven subscriptions or run the same deck through every AI model, so we do not rank generation accuracy, speed, accessibility, support or privacy. Where a provider did not show a stable public price, we say so instead of quoting an old one. Vendor feature pages establish what a product claims to do. They do not establish that it improves grades. ## What are the best Quizlet alternatives in 2026? ### 1. Quizgecko: best for turning your material into varied practice *Disclosure: this is our product. We have tried to describe it the same way we describe the others, limits included.* Quizgecko fits students whose source material already exists but whose practice does not. You can upload a PDF or PowerPoint, paste notes, add a public URL or [import a Quizlet set by its URL](https://quizgecko.com/quizlet). The same source can become flashcards with spaced repetition, graded quiz questions, study notes and podcast-style audio review. That matters when an exam asks for more than term-definition recall. A deck of economics cards helps with definitions. It does not give you practice comparing two market structures or applying a model to a new example. Quizgecko's [AI quiz generator](/) writes multiple choice, select-all, true/false, short-answer, fill-in-the-blank and matching questions from the same source. The limits are real. The free Basic plan allows one AI course a month, up to 50,000 tokens of source material per course, and one audio summary a month. That is enough to judge the output, not to run a semester. Plus costs $16 a month or $108 a year (about $9 a month), and Ultra is $29 a month. Both are more expensive than Quizlet Plus. There is also no large public library of shared sets, so it works best when you bring the material. Like every generative study tool, it can write a vague question, drop an exception or treat a footnote as a main point. Check generated items against the source you trust before you learn them. ### 2. Knowt: best free Quizlet-style alternative Knowt is the closest match for anyone searching "apps like Quizlet but free." Knowt says Learn mode is free for all flashcard sets, with unlimited rounds, and its free study modes include practice tests, spaced repetition and Match. You can bring sets over with its Chrome extension or a manual import. The paid Ultra plan was $24.99 a month, or $149.99 a year (about $12.99 a month), when checked. It removes ads and adds AI summarisers for PDFs, videos and lecture recordings, a podcast generator, a voice tutor and full AP, SAT and ACT prep. The free plan shows ads. One caution on migration: a browser extension depends on Quizlet's page staying the same. Import one small set and check it before moving a large library. Start here when free Learn-style study and easy migration matter most. Look elsewhere for fine scheduler control or a workflow built around your own course files. ### 3. Anki: best for control over spaced review Anki is the specialist on this list. The desktop app and AnkiWeb sync are free, AnkiDroid for Android is free, and the official iPhone and iPad app, AnkiMobile, is a $24.99 one-time purchase in the US App Store. Its strength is control. Anki supports the FSRS scheduler, rich media, card templates, tags, add-ons and decks of 100,000+ cards. That flexibility pays off for anyone reviewing the same material for months. It also creates setup work, and new users can spend more time adjusting deck options than answering cards. Anki does not write cards for you, so if card creation is your bottleneck, Anki will not fix it. You can, however, make cards elsewhere and review them in Anki. If you are only choosing between those two apps, our [Quizlet vs Anki comparison](https://quizgecko.com/blog/quizlet-vs-anki) goes deeper. ### 4. Brainscape: best for a simpler confidence-rated loop Brainscape asks you to reveal an answer, rate your confidence from 1 to 5, and brings low-confidence cards back sooner. It is easier to understand than a heavily configured Anki setup, with less fine control. The free Basic plan lets you type unlimited cards, import existing flashcards, use AI to make hundreds of cards, study with spaced repetition and study 2,500 pre-loaded flashcards. Pro was $19.99 billed monthly, $59.94 every six months, or $95.88 a year (shown as $7.99 a month) when checked. Pro adds unlimited AI cards, unlimited Certified decks, images and sound on cards, and reverse study. Brainscape suits focused flashcard practice without Anki's setup. It is less useful when you need varied exam questions from a stack of source files. ### 5. RemNote: best for linked notes and flashcards RemNote makes sense when note-taking and card-making are one process. You write notes, turn lines into cards where you wrote them, and review on a spaced schedule without switching apps. The free plan includes unlimited notes and flashcards but caps annotated PDFs at three and image occlusion at five cards. Pro was $96 a year ($8 a month) and
adds PDF annotation, image occlusion and the exam scheduler. Pro with AI was
$216 a year ($18 a month) and adds AI cards from text, PDFs and slides, AI
grading and chat.

The trade-off is density. A linked knowledge base is more system than you need
for a quick imported deck.

6. StudyFetch: best for a broad AI study workspace

StudyFetch takes uploaded course material into a Study Set. Its documentation
describes generating flashcards from your materials as term-and-definition,
audio, multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank or cloze cards, and importing Quizlet
sets by URL or Anki decks. Quizlet imports arrive as basic term-and-definition
cards that you can edit afterwards.

That puts it in the same category as Quizgecko, but we did not run matched
source files through both, so we cannot tell you which is more accurate.
StudyFetch offers a free start. We could not find a stable public US
subscription price, which is a drawback if you are comparing on budget.

7. Gizmo: best for game-like mobile recall

Gizmo's Magic Import accepts PDFs, recordings, pasted notes, photos,
PowerPoints, Quizlet sets, Anki decks, spreadsheets and websites. Its Memorise
mode uses game mechanics, and an AI tutor adds guided lessons.

The free plan has real limits. Gizmo's help centre says that losing 15 Hearts
while quizzing triggers a 10-minute wait, and free users can create two decks a
day with Magic Import, 20 minutes apart. Unlimited is sold as a yearly or
weekly plan, with the price and any student discount shown at checkout, so we
do not quote one.

Gizmo is for people who come back more often when review feels like a game. It
is harder to compare on budget.

What are the best free sites like Quizlet?

If you want to pay nothing at all, three options hold up. Knowt gives you free,
unlimited Learn rounds and practice tests on flashcard sets. Anki is free on
desktop, web and Android with free sync, though the iOS app costs $24.99 once.
Brainscape's Basic plan covers unlimited cards you make yourself with spaced
repetition.

Gizmo, RemNote, StudyFetch and Quizgecko also have free tiers, but treat those
as trials of a paid product. Gizmo meters Hearts and imports, RemNote caps PDFs
and AI use, and Quizgecko allows one AI course a month.

Is there a free alternative to Quizlet Learn?

Yes. Knowt's Learn mode is the most direct replacement: it mixes
multiple-choice, written, true/false and flashcard questions, and Knowt says it
is free for unlimited rounds. If what you liked about Learn was being quizzed
rather than flipping cards, Quizgecko's quizzes and Gizmo's Memorise mode do a
similar job, within their free limits. Anki has no Learn mode, but its spaced
review covers the same goal over a longer horizon.

Which flashcard apps like Quizlet work for NCLEX and TEAS prep?

High-stakes nursing exams test application and prioritisation, not only
definitions. The NCLEX test plans
published by NCSBN describe client-needs categories and clinical judgment,
which a term-definition deck cannot cover on its own. That changes which tool
makes sense.

  • For recall over a long program, such as lab values and drug classes, Anki is
hard to beat if you will curate decks.
  • For practice questions from your own lectures, Quizgecko can turn a med-surg
PDF or pharmacology slides into prioritisation and safety questions, plus
    flashcards.
  • For NCLEX-style question practice, Quizgecko's NCLEX-RN
    QBank
is in early beta. Questions are mapped to
the 2026 NCLEX-RN Test Plan and come with rationales for every answer option.
They are checked against web sources and reviewed by AI, but they are not yet
reviewed by humans or nurses. Treat them as extra practice, not as a
    substitute for a reviewed bank.
  • For the ATI TEAS, Quizgecko's TEAS study tools
build section-by-section review for Reading, Mathematics, Science, and
English and Language Usage from your notes. Generated questions are not
    official ATI TEAS items.

The caveat applies to every tool on this list. AI-generated or note-based
questions do not guarantee full test-plan coverage or realistic scoring. Use
official material from NCSBN for the NCLEX and from ATI for the
TEAS
alongside any app. This is study advice,
not clinical guidance, and none of these tools is endorsed by NCSBN, ATI or a
nursing school.

How do you move Quizlet sets to another app?

Start with what Quizlet allows. Its help centre says creators can export the
terms and definitions from their own sets: open the set on the website, choose
the more menu, then Export, pick the separators, and Copy text. Images are not
exported, and you cannot export a set you copied from another user.

  1. Export sets you created as text from the Quizlet website.
  2. For Anki, save the text as a .txt file and use File > Import with the
    matching separator.
  3. For Quizgecko, StudyFetch and Gizmo, paste the Quizlet set URL into their
import flows. Private or unavailable sets may not import.
  4. For Knowt, use the Chrome extension on the set page or paste the exported
    text.
  5. Spot-check terms, card direction and formatting before you study, especially
    for clinical content.

Test one small set before moving a whole library.

How do you turn your own material into practice?

One source document branching into flashcards, checked practice questions, audio and digital study activities

The best own-material workflow is deliberately boring:

  1. Start with one bounded source, such as a lecture on supply and demand,
rather than a whole semester of mixed files.
  2. Generate a small first set of cards and questions.
  3. Check every answer against the source before studying it.
  4. Delete duplicates and split cards that test several facts at once.
  5. Add application questions only where the source supports the answer.
  6. Review missed items later instead of regenerating a fresh set each time.

The review step is part of studying. It is not cleanup you can safely skip.

What does the evidence show, and not show?

The evidence supports study behaviours more confidently than it supports app
brands. A 2014 meta-analysis by Rowland found a general retention benefit for
testing compared with restudy,
though the size varied with the materials, retrieval format and feedback.
Cepeda and colleagues' 2006 review found a broad benefit for distributed over
massed practice
, with the best
spacing depending on how long you need to remember the material. Both are
strong direct evidence for the techniques.

Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed
practice
as high-utility techniques
across many learning conditions. Roediger and Karpicke found that testing
improved delayed retention compared with
restudying
for prose passages, even
though restudying looked better on a test given minutes later. Karpicke and
Roediger later found that repeated
retrieval
mattered more for delayed
vocabulary retention than repeated study.

What this does not show is that any app on this list improves grades. These
were controlled learning experiments, not trials of these products, so the
evidence for the apps themselves is indirect. A badly written card can still
teach the wrong fact or reward recognition over recall, whichever app it lives
in.

Is there a free alternative to Quizlet?

Yes. Knowt is the closest free replacement for Quizlet-style Learn and practice
tests. Anki is the stronger free choice if you want detailed spaced-repetition
control. Brainscape and RemNote also have useful free tiers, with different
limits.

Is Quizlet still free?

Partly. Signing up, making sets, Flashcards and games like Match are free with
ads. Learn and Test are limited on free accounts, and Quizlet Plus still caps
Learn at 20 rounds a month. Only Plus Unlimited removes the caps.

Can you import Quizlet sets into Quizgecko?

Yes, when the set is reachable by the importer. Paste the set URL into the
Quizlet import, then check that the terms and definitions came across
correctly.

What is the final verdict?

Choose the tool that removes your actual bottleneck:

  • If you want a free, familiar replacement for Learn, start with Knowt.
  • If you want scheduler control and will make your own cards, start with Anki.
  • If you need several practice formats from your own files or Quizlet sets,
compare Quizgecko and StudyFetch with the same small source.
  • If you want simpler flashcard review, try Brainscape.
  • If your notes and cards should live together, try RemNote.
  • If you study more when it feels like a game, try Gizmo.

Do not pay because a comparison page counted more features. Use the free tier,
bring one representative piece of your own material, and inspect the result.
Ten accurate questions tell you more than any feature list.
