What is Spaced Repetition?

How reviewing at the right moment helps you remember more for longer.

Updated Nov 21, 2025

Spaced repetition is a learning method that involves reviewing information at gradually increasing intervals. The key idea behind this approach is that by spacing out your study sessions and revisiting material just before you're about to forget it, you can significantly strengthen your memory and recall.

Imagine you're learning a new concept or trying to memorize a set of facts. With spaced repetition, instead of cramming everything in one lengthy study session, you break it down into smaller, spaced-out reviews. Initially, you might review the information frequently, but as you become more familiar with it, the intervals between reviews gradually increase.

This spacing effect has been proven to be highly effective for long-term retention. By challenging your brain to retrieve the information periodically, you reinforce the neural connections associated with that knowledge, making it easier to recall in the future.

How Quizgecko's Spaced Repetition Works

Read the card and try to recall the answer before revealing it. Then choose one of four ratings:

  • Again: You did not recall the answer. The card is due again in about two minutes and returns before your current study session finishes. Its day schedule starts over.
  • Hard: You recalled it with difficulty. A card that has not reached a day interval is due in 10 minutes. After it reaches a day interval, Hard schedules at least one day, with a shorter interval than Good. It keeps the card's place in the day schedule.
  • Good: You recalled the answer. This is the normal success rating that spaces your reviews. The first Good schedules one day; the next schedules six days. Later Goods multiply the card's saved day interval by its ease factor.
  • Perfect: Recall felt effortless. It uses the same day schedule with a 1.3 bonus over Good, up to the interval limit.

The rating buttons show the delay that each choice would assign when you study online. Again and Hard do not always increase the interval.

How Review Intervals Grow

The ease factor starts at 2.5 and changes with your ratings. With repeated Good ratings, the first intervals are one day, six days, and 15 days. Quizgecko uses the last saved day interval for the next calculation. Review intervals are capped at 365 days, so Good and Perfect can show the same delay at that limit.

Cards last reviewed under the older schedule restart at one day on their next Good or Perfect. The Perfect bonus applies on later reviews. This prevents old review counts from producing an excessively long delay.
